Evaluation

Evaluation-

To be honest, this has been the most stressful few weeks ever. With two deadlines being in on the same day, and having a lot of work/shoots outside university, I have been trying my hardest to organise myself and plan everything well so it all runs smoothly.
Also, being how I am, I do not make it easy for myself, but I like taking risks and pushing myself to the extreme. When given the assignment I was so excited as it gave me the chance to experiment, explore things that aren’t heard of in the beauty industry.
I decided to do 3 completely different looks, all involving people covering up their identity. I am very happy with how this project developed, and I feel I have exceeded my expectations, and my shoots have come out better than thought.
My blog shows my development and how my looks are more based around diversity than the 1920’s Weimar Berlin. I chose this because I thought there is much more to explore and I could put both my practical and technical skills into use and experiment. I wanted to show that not everything is as it seems, and many people try to cover up something, pretend to be someone or something that they aren’t. As I have grown up I have learnt a lot about this, and its something that is occurring in our everyday lives, but no one sees it; this is why I have tried to show this as much as I can in my images.
The choice of models is key for this unit, and I am really pleased with how they all worked with me, and how the images turned out. I really enjoyed working with Kieran, and it was a change for me working on an older mans skin that I am not used to. Also applying the foundation over the stubble was strange, however I am extremely proud of this image, and is most probably my favorite from this unit.
Emily’ s look was very challenging, as it’s such a deep subject to touch on. I know of someone who is familiar with this awful and shameful experience, and previous posts explores this further. Whilst applying the bruises it touched both Emily and myself inside, and it was quite sickening to look at. Emily again was an amazing model, as she portrays many women of todays society; getting dressed up, looking beautiful, cheerful, but behind the cover is something you would never expect, something so vivid, yet its reality.
Zaina as mentioned on my blog before, suffers from Vitiligo, and she feels the need that she has to cover up, a thing that I totally disagree on. In the world we live in today, everyone is so judgmental; no one can do or say anything without someone commenting. People are made to feel insecure, are made to change their natural selves, I want to make clear with my final images is that you cant judge a book by its cover, no one has the right to judge when they don’t know what’s going on deep down.
I am very proud of myself this term, and feel that I have spoke and portrayed personality and feelings both on my blog and in my images. I also feel that my photography and technical skills have improved as time goes on. I myself am shocked about how far my time management and development skills have come along, and I hope that this is shown on my blog.

Fishtail - zaina Hair

I am deciding to give Zaina a simple hairstyle, so the main concentration is on the face. In our studio lessons, we have been learning about plats, and i have found fishtail quite challenging. I decided to take a risk and give Zaina a fishtail plat for the final image.
Below are some images when i have practiced.

Practice Bruising

I am actually very impressed with the above photo. I was sitting on my bed on the phone, and we all know that we start doodling or doing something when getting bored on the phone, so i decided to pick up a dirty makeup brush, and started to paint my ankle, realising that it looked like a bruise, and that i should take a photo and blog about it. Its so good how somethings look so natural and how they turn out so well when not planned.
Below is an image we did in the studio, practicing black eyes. As you can see purples, greens, blues and yellows have been used, to create a 4 day old bruise. Vaseline was added on top to make it look swollen.

This 'wonderful' industry we are being led in to.

I am a great fan of the fashion designer Giles Deacon, and how he spoke out about women being asked to aspire to a completely unrealistic ideal of beauty. Women nowadays are portrayed in the industry as being stick thin, having the most amazing jawline, flawless skin, which in my eyes, nobody is naturally like that, unless you are put on a harsh diet and full of implants. It makes girls extremely insecure. The new generation is being brought up with front cover images of girls looking like barbie dolls. Having to read every other page about the 'amazing' new diet will make you loose 5 stone in a week, causing them to have eating disorders and feeling so insecure that they can't leave their house.
The Sunday Telegraph recently announced that fashion magazines are now manipulating images of skinny models to make them look fuller figured. I mean WHAT? What do they want us to look like?
One minute they are advertising how we should be looking like a Victorias Secret model, yet on every corner there is a new fast food store opening, or a new advert on the TV of a flawless skinned, tanned stick thin model eating a huge chocolate bar. Its crazy.
One thing i am a fan of is Madrid Fashion Week, when in 2006 they became the first catwalk to ban skinny models. Although this was after the death of the 22 year old model Luisel Ramos died after reportedly living off lettuce and diet coke before a runway. I am lucky enough to have lived in Madrid for 5 years, and also being able to sit front row of a few of the catwalks, and i am ashamed that Madrid Fashion week is not out there. It disgusts me that people could say “who knew little Madrid even had a fashion week, darling?” All you hear about is London, Paris and Milan, where they claimed that the 'all out ban' was too extreme and their size 0 models could stay. Size 0 is the equivalent to a british size 4, a 31.5 inch bust, a 23 inch waist and a 34 inch hips. The average size of a british 8 year old has a waist of 22 inches. It sickens me.
There is such a huge debate of how the right size of model should be, but it amazes me how the minds of top designers in this industry are-
Valentino - “If you put it on a girl and she’s a little heavy, not every dress looks sensational.”
Karl Lagerfeld-  “These are fat mummies who sit with a bag of potato chips in front of the television saying that thin models are ugly,” in the world of fashion, it’s all about “dreams and illusions, and no one wants to see round women.”
As you can tell, i could write about this for hours. I love looking at debates on the internet, however, as you can see i have my own opinions, which many people may not agree with. Personal image is portrayed in all my final images, calling out insecurity and fear of what others think.

Drag/Gender Disguise

I came across this short film, and found it quite funny. Its called female disguise, and you can probably guess what its about. Heres the link-
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xin9xk_female-disguise_shortfilms

Gender Disguise has been around for years, and even Shakespeare used it in the 'The Merchant of Venice' and 'Twelfth Night.' It is used in society by females to pass as male, and males to pass themselves off as female.

"Sirrah, go you to Barthol'mew my page, And see him dress'd in all suits like a lady; That done, conduct him to the drunkard's chamber, And call him 'madam,' do him obeisance."
— LordThe Taming of the Shrew

Leland Bobbe is a famous photographer who recently captured two sides of the cites Drag Queens- the unrestrained made-up drag divas, and the men that lie beneath.
"Bobbé tells Huffington Post Gay Voices, "Through the power of hair and makeup these men are able to completely transform themselves and find their female side while simultaneously showing their male side." Shockingly, the identities are composed in camera and are not separate images joined during editing." - The Huffington Post

Face Chart Zaina

Face Chart + Body for Emily

Above is a face chart and the products i will be using for my look 2. As you can see, there is bruising below the eye, which i will create with supra colours. One side is beautifully made up, and the other when she removes her makeup is whats hidden underneath.
Below is how my final image will be. One side as you can see is covered up, and the other is Emily's body full of bruises. The image shows where the bruising will be placed.

Face Chart for Kieran

I know i know, it is awful. I used watercolours, however there is not much to add to this look. It does make you ask, is this a woman or a man, just how i want people to question my final image, so this chart does portray something.

moodboard

I cannot place my moodboard on here, for some reason it wont let me, but it will be placed on my final PDF file.

Paintings

Below are some paintings i have done previously to show bruising. As you can see in the second picture, i have practiced adding bruising onto myself, however i think i have improved with the colourings as time goes on; you will see this in other posts. Obviously, these are related to my look two, with Emily being my model.

--------------------

As you can see, the two drawings from above are both done in charcoal, as i like experimenting with different media. They are to do with emotions, and how people have to hide because they have so much fear, just like my final images.

Domestic Violence

The deep dark world of Domestic Violence is often left unspoken, for the fear of shame and embarrassment. Behind closed doors across the world, many women are suffering at the hands of their husbands or partners in silence.
Furthermore, domestic violence means any act of violence,  including verbal abuse, sexual, and emotional, however i am going to focus on physical, as its such a common thing in todays society, but as mentioned before, left unspoken.
I have developed my research and spoken to a witness of physical violence, a female of 21 years, who fortunately has spoken out, not only to myself, but also to professionals who have helped her along the way. I was lucky enough to have a deep yet emotional conversation with her. I asked her many questions, one being:
"why did you choose to put up with such a hurtful and emotional circumstance for so long?"
-"because the i held such an amount of fear of leaving inside, thinking that things could get much worse..."
Many of her answers included the word "love" and stress, and that "one day everything could be perfect and the next my world would come tumbling down within seconds." "Its not easy to forget about hopes and dreams so easily."
-"You are made to feel as if you are in the wrong, i felt it was impossible to leave, but luckily i had the help of many people behind me, and the day came where i couldn't take it any more."

I came across these points when researching about domestic violence, explaining their ways of manipulation- http://www.helpguide.org/mental/domestic_violence_abuse_types_signs_causes_effects.htm

  • Dominance – Abusive individuals need to feel in charge of the relationship. They will make decisions for you and the family, tell you what to do, and expect you to obey without question. Your abuser may treat you like a servant, child, or even as his or her possession.
  • Humiliation – An abuser will do everything he or she can to make you feel bad about yourself or defective in some way. After all, if you believe you're worthless and that no one else will want you, you're less likely to leave. Insults, name-calling, shaming, and public put-downs are all weapons of abuse designed to erode your self-esteem and make you feel powerless.
  • Isolation – In order to increase your dependence on him or her, an abusive partner will cut you off from the outside world. He or she may keep you from seeing family or friends, or even prevent you from going to work or school. You may have to ask permission to do anything, go anywhere, or see anyone.
  • Threats – Abusers commonly use threats to keep their partners from leaving or to scare them into dropping charges. Your abuser may threaten to hurt or kill you, your children, other family members, or even pets. He or she may also threaten to commit suicide, file false charges against you, or report you to child services.
  • Intimidation – Your abuser may use a variety of intimidation tactics designed to scare you into submission. Such tactics include making threatening looks or gestures, smashing things in front of you, destroying property, hurting your pets, or putting weapons on display. The clear message is that if you don't obey, there will be violent consequences.
  • Denial and blame – Abusers are very good at making excuses for the inexcusable. They will blame their abusive and violent behavior on a bad childhood, a bad day, and even on the victims of their abuse. Your abusive partner may minimize the abuse or deny that it occurred. He or she will commonly shift the responsibility on to you: Somehow, his or her violent and abusive behavior is your fault.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes in the skin are destroyed. It results in depigmented/white patches of the skin in any location of the body. Some say that is caused by a weakened immune system, which attacks the cells and causes them not to function properly, and others say it is genetic. 0.5% to 1% of the worlds population have Vitiligo.
It is not painful, however it has many psychological and emotional consequences. In some countries, e.g India, women with the disease are sometimes discriminated against in marriage. Adolescents who are concerned about their appearance feel embarrassed and ashamed, and in many cases, become depressed.
I am very grateful for my model being an open enough person to not be ashamed of her appearance in such a judgemental world.
Here are some images of people who suffer from Vitiligo-

Peer Review- Timed assessment Outcome

When given the brief for the timed assessment, there were a few problems as i had to fly back to Spain due to family problems, but both myself and Lorna, nonetheless, maintained a great deal of communication between us both. I spoke to my tutor and asked for our weeks to be swapped around, as Lorna was being assessed first, however i did feel bad as my look was not ready, and i felt the need to be assessed first, so Lorna had more time to plan. We both were asking questions throughout this period of time to achieve a full interpretation of each others outcomes.
As mentioned before, with the great deal of communication, Lorna sent me her product lists, fact chart and practice images, which were very clear, detailed and understanding of the look she wanted to go for. I think we both worked well as a team, giving each other both constructive criticism and advice, so that in the future, we can improve on our skills. Lorna is a very organised and to the point when it comes to her work, and i was very lucky to work with her during this assessment.

Heres the makeup i applied following Lorna's Design.

-----------------------------------

I sent Lorna my face charts, product list and practice images within good time of the assessment, so Lorna could be identified with the look i wanted to achieve. I felt that my face charts were extremely clear and detailed, and this showed in the final images, as lorna presented my look exceptionally well. Lorna worked in a professional manor throughout the 2 hours, and finished my look i had designed within the time given. She followed all the health and safety requirements, and her workplace was spotless. Her makeup application was great, and i felt comfortable during the assessment. However, Lorna needs to learn to calm down and be more relaxed, as at some points, i could see Lorna getting stressed and starting to panic. I feel as if she has learned how to do a high detailed makeup in a short amount of time, and to do it to a high standard, and this has helped her prepare for the future. Both of our team skills have improved greatly.

-----------------------------------

 - Improvements-

As a makeup artist, from this assessment i have learnt that more practice needs to be done beforehand, however from previous mistakes, i have learnt to control myself and keep calm, even if something goes wrong. I would of liked to of practiced using the products specified, as many of Lorna's items were not in my kit.

--------------------------------

- Self Reflection-

The timed assessment has definitely helped my time management skills, and also working as a team in this industry. I enjoyed designing, and watching how my partner followed my instructions. It has also opened my eyes to what the real industry is like; having a short amount of time to complete a look, and do it to a high standard. It involves a lot of consideration, as i have had to think about others abilities, and also involves a high amount of preparation, and i think all of this has helped me learn from mistakes, improve on my communication skills and prepare me for the future ahead.
